The Prospect Parks and Recreation Committee invites residents to attend a unique and informative lecture on natural soundscapes:

Topic: Listen: Wild Soundscapes of Prospect and Surrounding Areas (details below)

Where: Prospect City Hall Council Chamber

When: 10 AM - 11:30 AM, Saturday, March 22nd

Lecturer: Luke Pearson

Decode the mysteries of nature with an introduction to the wildlife sounds of your own community. Using a mixture of scientific and artistic observations, join biologist and artist Luke Pearson as we explore the unique soundscapes that are created by the birds, mammals, amphibians, insects, and other inhabitants of the Louisville area. Learn about the subtle differences that make your own backyard special, why listening to soundscapes is important, and what we can learn from the world around us by simply taking a moment to open our ears. We will examine a soundscape recorded nearby for the Brownsboro Trail Alliance as an example. Afterwards, we will hike from City Hall to Putney Pond to practice intentional listening and decipher what the world is telling us.

About Luke

Luke “L.C.” Pearson is a naturalist and sound artist who strives to promote meaningful relationships between people and the natural world. Originally from Louisville, Luke spent several years working and studying in Massachusetts, Colorado, and Washington State before returning to work as an educator for the Louisville Nature Center and wildlife specialist for Cave Hill Cemetery. While studying music engineering, Luke traveled to South Africa with the goal of recording the music of nature. Upon returning, Luke felt a calling to unmask the beauty of wildlife sounds across North America and study the meaning behind every sound, from the quiet trill of a cricket to the ultrasonic chatters of a bat.
